On the 28th of November 2007 Abu Naser and Joana Eaves took Taz, Naznin, Aiysha and Joseph from Collingham Gardens (green group) and Mohammed, Thran, Claude and Joao from Chelsea and Westminster hospital on a Geography fieldtrip to the Kew Gardens to learn about how plants adapt to their environment and climate. For Joao and Claude we also tied in other subjects, for example they were asked to take pictures of the landscape and plants (Art) and to learn about adaptation to environment (Science).

How we spent the day

1. In pairs the students were asked to find the ‘Sitting lady’ statue made by Henry Moore on the Kew gardens map and find their way there.
2. Claude and Joao were asked to guide us to the lake sign the map and reading the signposts.
3. Then we sat around a tree by the lake and ate our lunch.

4. After lunch it was almost time for our pre-booked session on ‘Plant adaptations to environment and climate’. For this session we had to make our way to the Palm House. Taz and Joseph were asked to find a quick route and get us there within 10 minutes.
5. Once we got to the Palm House we had about 30 minutes to look around and had an opportunity to do some sketches of the plants.

6. Then at 1:00 pm we meet the Kew teacher who delivered the session on ‘Plant Adaptations to Environment and Climate’. During the session we explored the desert and rainforest habitats through a tour of the Princess of Wales Conservatory. We discovered the strategies and adaptations of plants in order to survive in these environments.   We also meet some Carnivorous plants, an extreme and gruesome form of plant adaptation!

The visit to Kew Gardens was a fantastic experience for our children and staff. It offered an exciting and stimulating environment that is full of opportunities to learn and play.

The session on ‘Plant Adaptations to Environment and Climate’ was amazing and the children benefited from it greatly.
