The Government Policy "Access to Education for children and young people with Medical needs" states: 

Access to education
"All children should continue to have access to as much education as their medical condition allows so that they are able to maintain the momentum of their education and to keep up with their studies."

The statutory framework provides that
“Each local education authority shall make arrangements for the provision of suitable education at school or otherwise than at school for those children of compulsory school age who, by reason of illness, exclusion from school or otherwise, may not for any period receive suitable education unless such arrangements are made for them.”  - (Section 19 of the Education Act 1996)


 

The RBKC policy "A Policy for Children and Young People with Medical Needs within RBKC" states:

"Ensuring that children and young people with diagnosed medical needs have proper access to education is a key priority in our Educational Development Plan and an integral part of our Inclusion Policy.  The Local Authority’s Hospital School and Access to Inclusion Services will ensure that pupils with medical needs relating to (physical or mental health) receive a high quality education with the minimum level of disruption to their learning."
