Goodbye to Brompton on Rose Ward

Friday May 15th 2026 has been a momentous day for us at Chelsea Community Hospital as the paediatric cardiac and respiratory services finally transferred to The Evelina Children’s Hospital.

Chelsea Community Hospital School has been providing education at the Brompton Hospital site of the school for more than 30 years. From the earliest days, when Janette Steel, the school’s former headteacher, secured a tiny classroom perched at the entrance of Rose Ward, the school was in a prime position to distract and detour any patient who thought it might have been a better idea to leave the ward than to stay and join in with the hive of activities and learning that went on in the classroom.

The years saw expansion and adaptation of the school to support changing medical needs and increasing numbers, with pupils being seen in the classrooms, by their bedside, in cubicles or on PICU. We managed to get everywhere!

To our NHS colleagues, we owe a huge debt. You have hosted us, on Rose Ward, over all this time and accepted us as part of the multi-disciplinary team in a truly collaborative way. We shall miss your expertise, your insight, your commitment, your dedication and your support. We wish you all a new and equally collaborative experience in your new home at Evelina Children’s Hospital.

There are so many CCHS staff who, over the years, spent time at this site and worked their magic, as learning assistants, artists, musicians, teachers, storytellers, youth workers, careers advisors and performers. You created this precious space for patients to have a different experience of hospital life and to keep on with their education in the most challenging of times. Your role in the life at CCHS on Rose Ward has been profound and played a part in creating the exceptional education service that patients, parents/carers and NHS colleagues came to expect.

Our work as teachers has been among the most gratifying and would have been impossible without the trust of our parents/carers and our wonderful pupils. You made our work so very rewarding. Your resilience and commitment to your education as pupils, parents and carers put us in the most privileged position as educators, and all of us are truly grateful for the experience that you have given us.

We now hand you over to Andrew Baldock acting headteacher and his team at Evelina Children’s Hospital School. We have been working with Andrew and his team, since the move was confirmed. We know that they will be looking to nurture and guide your time in school as a patient in the Evelina Hospital with their own special commitment and dedication.

On behalf of the CCHS, our local authority and our governing body, we wish all who have moved, every success with continued growth and development for the clinical teams, the pupils and their parents/carers for the future. CCHS has loved every moment of being part of the Rose Ward team.

Your memories of CCHS at the Brompton

I had so much fun at hospital school at the Brompton. It was a chance to escape off the ward and have some normal in my life. All of the teachers made me feel welcome and was fun going to hospital school. My favorite day was Fridays when we done baking!

It has been such a pleasure working with the Chelsea Community Hospital School, always committed to making the hospital a brighter place for patients and their families. Students have created beautiful displays of art and photography to keep our corridors warm and inviting, and a Happy News corner outside PICU where many parents need it. The school team suggest thoughtful treats and rewards for patients, from getting to know each student so closely. I have even enjoyed sweet treats, shared with me from proud patients who look forward to their school baking sessions. Thank you for bringing smiles to us all, families and staff alike, you will be greatly missed.

My most unforgettable memories of school was the hatching of the chicks 🥰 it was a pleasure working with all of the teachers. They are all amazing and incredible and how they still keep our patients excited to attend school despite of them being an in patients. Will definitely miss you all and handover times 🙂

I have many lovely memories from my time at the Brompton Hospital. I loved the school trips especially to the London Dungeon. It was also great fun taking students to the Ferrari and Lamborghini garages. I also ran youth club for many years which was lots of fun.

I taught at the Brompton for only 1 year but it had a lasting impact on me and helped me see how important education is for children in hospital, in what ever form they can manage.
Two memories stand out for me:
1) teaching forces and momentum using a spiny chair on wheels down the corridor...
2) exploding a bicarbonate and vinegar mini rocket in a child's room. It stank. We may have done it a few times. Is it safe to admit to this now?

Thank you so much to the wonderful teachers at the school. You are always so willing to come to PICU/PHDU to support the children’s education. You are incredibly courteous and always check with the medical team to ensure it is suitable for each child to attend school. We have worked so well together as part of a truly multidisciplinary and holistic approach to patient care. We will miss you all very much.

Lauren

Thank you for all the wonderful help and support over the many years for our patients. You have all been incredible to work alongside with, and we will miss you all. One of my favourite memories was most definitely the chicks hatching!

Laura (Dietitian)

Thank you for all the care you have shown our patients. They are always enthusiastic about the fantastic activities they have done at school, especially the cooking/baking sessions. Thank you also for accommodating our requests to do with their healthcare so flexibly. Your team will be missed.

I am a consultant at RBH, and one of the magic formulas we developed so well was the multi-disciplinary team that worked with so much dedication to deliver the best wrap around care for patients, parents and sometimes even siblings. In the school, at the bedside, and through being involved in so many aspects of a patients needs in delivering better care. I always have felt that we couldn't ever do a proper job as paediatricians without our teacher colleagues. They are the eyes and ears on the ground, keeping kids safe and supporting their medical needs to allow them to get into and stay in school. The Hospital school team does all of those roles and more. The expertise developed around educating very sick children in all hospital settings is a revelation, and the Brompton team were brilliant educators, mentors, counselors and colleagues to the whole MDT. It is such a sadness to lose this special team of friends and colleagues. Services like ours grow so organically, over time with respect and generosity from everyone involved. It feels like the end of a love affair - poignant and heartbreaking. Thank you all so much for everything you have done for our patients and families.
